- The technology behind this format was developed by the NHK and commercially distributed by Panasonic
- This format was chosen as the archival digital video tape of choice for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in 1998
- D3 used the same technology as D2 but in a smaller cassette; this format offered the only lossless digital tape camcorders available on the market
